Who's out for the 2000 contest?

An analysis of the scores. The European Broadcasting Union is the final arbiter, however.

Possibly superseded by events - see this page for news from the EBU

The 1999 contest saw the United Kingdom get its second worst place (12th), and Spain, Cyprus & Poland had their worst placings.

2000?

For the 2000 contest, some countries will be disqualified based upon poor scoring in the past 5 contests.

This table shows the average scores over the past 5 years.

The big four countries (in yellow) pay more, so are guaranteed entry, as is the 1999 winner Sweden (white).

Countries disqualified last year can now return.

These are Greece, FYR Macedonia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Romania & Finland (purple).

Italy did not show the 1999 contest so cannot return in 2000.

The position of Russia & Hungary is unclear.

23 entries are expected for 2000; the ones marked in purple, white & yellow are assured, so there are 12 more spaces to go to the best scoring countries.

Turkey & Austria are most at risk on this analysis if Russia & Hungary return, or another country joins.

Of course a country may decline to enter, and Belgium and Slovenia may then be able to enter.

There's a long way to go yet!
